Born in the Netherlands in 1898, after several trips to Italy (visiting Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria), Escher arrived in Rome in 1923, where he lived for twelve years until 1935. The Roman period had a strong influence on all his later work that saw him prolific in the production of lithographs and engravings, especially of landscapes, views, architecture and views of that ancient and baroque Rome that he loved to investigate in its most intimate dimension, that of the night, in the dim light of a lantern. Published on the occasion of the Rome exhibition, the monograph traces the poetics of this visionary artist through more than three hundred works divided into eight sections: The Beginnings; Italy; Tassellature; Metamorphosis; Structure of Space; Geometric Paradoxes; Commissioned Works; Eschermania. Works that include new acquisitions and many of the most significant pieces that have made Escher famous throughout the world: from the now iconic Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935) to Bond of Union (1956), from Metamorphosis II (1939) and Day and Night (1938) to the famous series of the Emblemata and the complete series of Twelve Roman Nocturnes produced in 1934.
