Built between 1932 and 1935 by the Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi and later updated by his colleague Tomaso Buzzi, Villa Necchi Campiglio is a sumptuous single-family residence located in the heart of Milan, surrounded by a large garden and equipped with a tennis court and swimming pool. Still a little-known building in Portaluppi's oeuvre, the residence represents an extraordinary case of an urban villa in the name of modernity, set in a context of great architectural charm. Donated to the FAI in 2001, after careful restoration it became a house-museum and is now enriched by two valuable collections Claudia Gian Ferrari's collection of works of art from the early 20th century (with works by Arturo Martini, Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico, Mario Sironi and others) and the collection of paintings and decorative arts from the 18th century donated by Alighiero and Emilietta de' Micheli (with paintings by Canaletto, Tiepolo, Marieschi and Rosalba Carriera as well as miniatures by Jean Baptiste Isabey and precious ceramics). The guide illustrates with clear and concise texts the architecture, history and daily rituals of the residential complex which, having escaped the bombings of the war and never been altered over the years, has come down to us perfectly intact, an accomplished expression of the genius of its designer but also a mirror of an era and the elegant lifestyle of its owners, well-known exponents of the Lombard upper middle class, whose name is linked in the memory of Italians to the famous sewing machines.
